I felt a bit feverish and so went to the doctor. The doctor examined me and handed over a dozen colored capsules, six tablets, some powder and a bottle of syrup.
“Excuse me” I said. “Are these only for me or for all my relatives both on the father’s and mother’s side?”
The doctor clarified “This is for you alone. You’re running a high fever and there is no doubt on that count. Issue is whether it is malaria or typhoid. We will come to know that through these capsules. The red ones are for malaria and the green ones are for typhoid. One of them should work and get rid of whatever is the cause for the fever. The other one which does not work will cause a vomiting sensation.”
“I see” I said.
“That is where the orange ones will come into play. It has an ability to halt the vomiting and clear the food pipe. But the problem is once vomiting sensation goes away you will suffer from acidity.
The white powder given to you is to neutralize the acidity caused by the orange capsules.”
“It is amazing to know how much the medical field has advanced.” I said.
“But the white powder has its own side effects. It will produce a whistling sound in the ear and it needs to be tackled without wasting time. The yellow capsules are for meant for that very purpose.”
“I suppose the whistling will stop with the yellow capsules!”
“That is asking for too much.” said the doctor. “The yellow capsules will enable you distinguish between the whistling sound produced by the traffic police and the whistling sound due to excessive usage of mobile and other whistles blown by kids etc. Once you are able to identify who is whistling and for what purpose there is no reason to get alarmed.”
“This capsule I guess is safe.”
“It is absolutely safe but it may sometimes result in the nose block and even a sinus trouble. To counter that effect I have given you white tablets. To taken thrice a day for two days, it will remove the nose block and enable you to breathe freely.”
I heaved a sigh of relief.
“This is the most critical time in the treatment of any type of fever. One should not put the shutters down and relax. The white tablet while relieving the nose problem may cause a shooting pain below the knees. Unless we arrest this tendency at once through the painkillers and antibiotics which I have given you, you may not be able to walk.”
My legs developed a slight numbness.
The doctor drank some water and continued “The antibiotics and the pain killers which help overcome the knee pain have a tendency to cause a burning sensation in the stomach and even throw up ulcers and blisters in the skin. But there is no need to get alarmed. The syrup and few tablets of B-Complex capsules will soften the burns in the stomach. As far as the blisters are concerned, I will write a couple of ointments which if applied twice a day, will get your skin back to normalcy.”
I finally got up and said “Doctor, I am very impressed with the line of treatment. But only thing is that you have given me so many tablets and capsules that I fear I may forget which to have when?”
The doctor replied “Don’t worry I will give you few memory pills which will enable you to remember that.”
